KUWAIT CITY, June 17, (KUNA): The Kuwaiti Public Authority for Food and Nutrition stressed the importance of the fifth meeting of the Gulf Ministerial Committee for Food Safety in strengthening the joint

Gulf action in the field of food safety and unifying procedures to ensure food quality and to face challenges, variables and modern technologies in the field of food production and circulation, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, says Dr. Reem Al-Fulaij, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Director General of the commission, and head of the delegation of the State of Kuwait at the meeting.

Dr. Reem Al-Fulaij, told Kuwait News Agency that the online meeting of this committee from the General Secretariat of the Gulf Cooperation Council scheduled for Thursday will be held under the chairmanship of the Kingdom of Bahrain and the participation of the ministers concerned with food safety in the GCC countries.

Al-Fulaij indicated that many topics were approved in the preparatory meeting of the undersecretaries of the ministries concerned with food safety last June, in preparation for presenting them for approval to the ministers at the meeting Thursday.

She explained that one of the most important topics on the agenda is to update the Gulf Guide for Controlling Imported Food and work on approving the unified food law system for the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council and its executive regulations.

She stated that among the topics included is the adoption of the work plan of the Gulf Committee for Food Safety and the adoption of a mechanism for imposing and lifting the ban on the import of food of animal origin and its products for a period of two years, and other issues related to food safety in the GCC.

She pointed out that food safety is a top priority for officials and decision makers in the GCC countries who support the system based on it by all available means, especially amid the high rates of disease cases due to unhealthy or contaminated food.

Al-Fulaij stressed that food security represents a very important challenge in our time and places the responsibility on the countries of the world to find appropriate solutions not only to provide food, but also to ensure its safety and suitability for human consumption in order to preserve public health amid the increasing risks and diseases transmitted by water and food.
