Comprehensive maintenance around Kuwait’s most important coral reef sites
The Kuwaiti diving team of the Environmental Volunteer Foundation has completed a comprehensive maintenance project for marine anchorages at the most important coral reef sites in the Kuwait Sea, with the support of the Environment Public Authority, Kuwait International Bank and Kuwait Petroleum International.
The marine operations officer in LieutenantGeneral Waleed Al-Shatti told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on Thursday that the team installed and maintained 90 marine anchors around the coral reefs of the three southern islands namely Qaruh, Kubbar and Umm AlMaradim, in addition to the reefs of Al-Buniya, Al-Bunaider, Arifjan and Umm Deira.
Al-Shatti added that the coral reefs on the islands are located on their four sides, so the team installed these anchors so that it would be easy for islanders to safely exploit them without breaking the coral reefs when using iron anchoring methods.
He stressed the importance of protecting wildlife in coral reef sites, noting that the team installed these anchors and many marine and environmental operations to protect and rehabilitate Kuwaiti islands and protect coral reefs.
He expressed the hope of island goers not to catch fish because of its impact on marine life in general in coral reef sites and not to throw waste on the coast of the islands, as well as not to damage sites of turtle eggs.
He thanked all cooperating and supporting authorities for this environmental project, the General Administration of Coast Guard and the Environment Public Authority for their cooperation, wishing that support would continue in order to preserve coral reefs and wildlife. (KUNA)
