KUWAIT CITY, Dec 29, (KUNA): His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah received a phone call from Bahrain’s Crown Prince and
Prime Minister Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa on Wednesday, who congratulated him on forming the new government.
His Highness the prime minister, on his part, thanked Prince Salman very much for his kind feelings, wishing him a long and healthy life and more development for Bahrain.
CAIRO, Dec 29, (KUNA): A visiting Kuwaiti official on Wednesday affirmed the pivotal role of the Arab Human Rights Commission (the Charter Committee).
The assistant foreign minister for human rights affairs, Ambassador Talal Al-Mutairi, expressed hope that the commission would pursue its role for ensuring implementation of terms of the Arab Charter for Human Rights.
Al-Mutairi was speaking in a press statement following a consultative meeting, held under his chairmanship.
Meanwhile, the commission Chairman Justice Jaber Al-Meri affirmed significance of holding the meeting at this level on annual basis, indicating that the participants in the session focused the talks on internal issues.
Adopted
The commission establishment was adopted at the Arab Summit held in Tunisia in 2004.
The Arab human rights charter went into effect in 2009 and was adopted by a total of 16 Arab States.
The commission comprises seven members, chosen by the states parties of the charter, functioning independently from governments and the Arab League.
They regularly examine human rights conditions in the Arab countries.
The parties’ states report to the commission about their plans in the realm of liberties and rights.
Today’s session was attended by representatives of Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Libya, Algeria, Palestine, Qatar, Iraq, Sudan, Bahrain and Jordan in addition to the Arab League assistant and head of social affairs, Ambassador Haifaa Abu Ghazala and members of the commission.
