‘Addressing threats of war also key’

-

NEW YORK, Oct 13, (KUNA): The State of Kuwait has said the only way to guarantee non-use of nuclear weapons was to get rid of them.

Faisal Al-Enezi, Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, called on importance of multilateral action for disarmament and non-proliferation of weapons under the UN umbrella.

He was addressing the UN General Assembly’s first committee and said the ultimate goal was the complete disarmament of weapons in general in order to achieve genuine peace and security, as well as addressing threats of wars.

Al-Enezi voiced concern regarding failure of abiding by nuclear non-proliferation treaty and banning of nuclear tests, urging all member countries to unite to address these concerns.

Kuwait, he added, chaired a conference on clearing the Middle East from nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction (WMD) since last November, and said Kuwait would reach out to all participants in the next conference that would be held next month.

Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev welcomed the State of Kuwait becoming the 28th member of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA).

During his speech at the sixth session of the CICA Heads of State Summit in the Kazakh capital, Astana, President Tokayev affirmed that Kuwait’s accession to the CICA will lead to developing and strengthening the continental organization.

In remarks during the summit, Kuwait’s Ambassador to Kazakhstan Dr. Omar Al-Kandari said that Kuwait’s membership of CICA represents a qualitative leap in the level of regional cooperation and new development in the directions of political, security, cultural, and economic cooperation, in addition to enhancing Kuwait’s openness to this continent.

This membership will give Kuwait a greater opportunity to serve peace, cooperation and development in Asia in line with the principles of Kuwait’s long-standing foreign policy, he added.
