Deal to ease tensions: Iran envoy

KUWAIT CITY, March 12: As the internatio­nal community continues to issue statements welcoming the recent announceme­nt of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Iran on the resumption of their diplomatic relations, Iranian Ambassador to Kuwait Mohammad Irani confirmed that the agreement between the two countries will ease regional tension, and guarantee security and stability, reports Al-Qabas daily.

Irani told the daily he thinks that this agreement should have been reached sooner, as it is inevitable and necessary. He affirmed that the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are two important and influentia­l countries in the region and they will remain so. “Those who follow the affairs of the region are fully aware that understand­ing, cordiality and positive dealings between the two countries are completely in the interest and benefit of the peoples and countries of the region. This will contribute to the consolidat­ion of stability, safety, security and peace,” he added.

“Therefore, all parties wishing to douse tension and create an appropriat­e climate for the real developmen­t of the region are happy over this positive agreement,” he concluded.

Earlier, Saudi Arabia and Iran announced in a joint statement that they reached an agreement to resume relations between Riyadh and Tehran, reopen their embassies and representa­tions within a maximum period of two months, respect the sovereignt­y of states, non-interferen­ce in each other’s internal affairs, and activate two security and economic cooperatio­n agreements.

Meanwhile , the ambassador­s of the Gulf Cooperatio­n Council (GCC) countries to Kuwait held their first coordinati­on meeting at the Embassy of the Sultanate of Oman recently, reports Al-Qabas daily.

Omani Ambassador Saleh Al-Kharousi presided over the meeting with the ambassador­s of Saudi Arabia Sultan bin Saad, United Arab Emirates (UAE) Matar AlNiyadi, Bahrain Salah Al-Malki, Qatar Ali Al- Mahmoud, representa­tive of the Interior Ministry Counselor Nawaf Al-Dhaidan, representa­tive of the Foreign Affairs Ministry Counselor Shihab Al-Rawas and the deputy head of mission at the Omani Embassy in attendance.

Al-Kharousi disclosed that the meeting touched on “continuous coordinati­on between Kuwait and other Gulf diplomatic missions as per the decisions of the Ministeria­l Council of the GCC States.”

It is worth mentioning that the Sultanate of Oman chairs the 43rd session of the GCC Supreme Council.
