Resuming ties with Iran serves stability of region: Saudi envoy

KUWAIT CITY, March 26: The agreement to restore relations between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Iran under Chinese auspices, and the prospects are bright for the meeting between the foreign ministers of the two countries within two months, but the date and place are being determined, reports Al-Qabas daily.

In a statement to the daily, the Saudi Ambassador to Kuwait said according to his assessment of the Chinese mediation, “We hope that it will be appropriat­e, as the Chinese side is a source of confidence for both parties, and we hope that the Chinese mediation will proceed as hoped for.”

Speaking of the Gulf reactions to this agreement, he said: “We look at the interest of the Kingdom first, then the interests of the region as a whole, and I believe that the reactions come not only from the Gulf countries, but the countries of the region and the world as a whole were there are positive signs of stability in the region.”

Cooperatio­n

Asked about whether there will be cooperatio­n between the Kingdom and Iran, he said: “I cannot be certain of anything now, but after the return of official relations during the meeting of the two foreign ministers, things will become clear to us. We hope that relations will return as they were before.”

Regarding the possibilit­y of the Kingdom witnessing the upcoming meeting between the Saudi and Iranian foreign ministers, he only said: “I do not know, but everything is permissibl­e. The Kingdom is always proactive in embracing meetings and calling for them on its lands, and it is a source of confidence for all, and the vision will become clear to us in the coming days or weeks.” Once again, the date and place of the meeting between the foreign ministers of the two countries has not yet been determined.

He pointed out that “the reactions to the Saudi-Iranian agreement to resume relations are positive, and the Kingdom is a source of global confidence,” stressing that “the resumption of relations serves the stability of the region.”

The Ambassador of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques to Kuwait, Sultan bin Saad, referred to the phone call that Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan made with his Iranian counterpar­t, Hussein Amir Abdollahia­n, during which the two sides exchanged congratula­tions and blessings on the occasion of the month of Ramadan.

He added: The two sides agreed to hold a bilateral meeting between them soon, in order to pave the way for the reopening of embassies and consulates between the two countries.
