Speaker hails brotherly ties with Jordan
AMMAN: Parliament speaker Marzouq Al-Ghanim expressed the Kuwaiti National Assembly’s appreciation of Jordan’s role on the Syrian crisis and pledged Kuwait’s commitment to parliamentary ties with its Arab neighbours.
“HH the Amir Sheikh Sabah AlAhmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah is dedicated to strengthening brotherly relations with Jordan,” he said, noting specifically that “parliamentary cooperation between both countries is a reflection of the strong bond that ties together the two wise leaderships of the brotherly nations.”
The Kuwaiti chief parliamentarian, who is currently on his first visit to Jordan since assuming office, was speaking in a meeting with Jordan’s Speaker of the House of Representatives Saad Al-Srour, during which both agreed on a joint declaration for early consultations on issues of mutual significance ahead of attending regional and international podiums.
Al-Ghanim, as head of the Arab group at the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), expressed the readiness of the National Assembly “to accept any suggestions aimed at supporting Arab stances and aiding their causes at this important international venue.”
He highlighted the importance of unity on issues that affect Arab parliaments by building upon joint interests in facing challenges that threaten the region and leave negative repercussions on its nations.
Meanwhile, Al-Srour, who was invited by Al-Ghanim to visit Kuwait, said “we (Jordan) will be loyal to the State of Kuwait, which always stood by Jordan, and we will make sure to maintain the purity of relations between both nations.”
The people of Jordan value highly Kuwait’s support, which was sometimes extended to “critical periods”, and at times his country went through rough times, said the Jordanian parliamentarian.
Noting examples of the cooperation between both countries, he said that “King Abdullah II of Jordan continues to direct his government to work to ease the stay of Kuwaiti college students in Jordan, providing them with the smoothest of facilities,” and that Kuwaiti investments have had a huge impact on development plans in Jordan.
Kuwaiti policies have always been a source of great admiration and appreciation in Jordan, and its deci- sion to host an Arab-African summit is an important factor illustrating the role it plays in the region.
On Arab affairs, the two lawmakers saw eye-to-eye on the need for a political solution that puts a stop to the bloodshed in Syria and limits the suffering of its people. They also agreed the need for joint Arab action on the parliamentary scale to defend Al-Aqsa Mosque from the “campaign” it is being targeted with from the forces of the Israeli occupation.
Al-Ghanim also later met Jordan’s Speaker of the Senate Taher Al-Masri, who reiterated his compatriot parliamentarian’s comments on the ties which combine both countries. AlMasri also spoke highly of Kuwaiti democracy, which he described as “stable, firm and proactive in the field of pan-Arab action.” — KUNA
