Kuwait urges int’l pressure on Israel

-

VIENNA: Kuwait called on the international community to assume its legal, humanitarian and moral responsibility to protect the Palestinian people.

This came during a speech delivered by Ambassador Abdallah Al-Obaidi, First Secretary at the Embassy of Kuwait in Vienna, on the occasion of marking the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People yesterday.

The United Nations General Assembly called in 1977 to celebrate on the 29th of November of each year the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, the day in 1947 saw resolution 181 calling for the partition of Palestine.

“The latest Israeli aggression on the war-ravaged Gaza Strip which killed and injured more than 11,000, a third of whom were children, and displaced more than 300,000 people, occurred under the nose of the international community including numerous of its institutions,” Obaidi said.

Kuwait called on the international community to press Israel to halt its illegal practices, including building settlements, confiscation of Palestinian territories, construction of a separation wall and Judaization of Jerusalem.

Obaidi noted that such practices did not only pose a challenge to the international community but also led to the failure of the two-state solution and instability in the Middle East region. He said that a comprehensive and fair peace will only be achieved through respecting and implementing the resolutions of the international legitimacy and recognizing a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital. Kuwait appealed again to the international community to provide guarantees to resume peace negotiations between Palestine and Israel in implementation of Security Council resolutions and the aims of the Arab Peace Initiative. From this point, Kuwait underlines its full support of the Palestinian people in their long struggle to restore their legal rights and establish their independent state with the borders of June 4, 1967.

The State of Kuwait also appealed to all countries keen on the UN Charter to back the Palestinian people in setting up their independent state. Obaidi pointed out that Palestine has the right to ask the UN to get complete membership, stressing Kuwait’s support of the Palestinian people in this demand. In this regard, Kuwait welcomed Sweden’s historical decision that recognized a Palestinian state, calling on all countries to take a similar decision.—
