Kuwait earns recognition for its humanitarian role
GENEVA: The United Nations Human Rights Council’s applause of the international donors conference’s results is tantamount to new international recognition of Kuwait’s humanitarian role, the Kuwaiti envoy to the UN said. Ambassador Jamal Al-Ghuneim, Kuwait’s permanent delegate to the UN, said in remarks to KUNA that such an international acknowledgement, being publicized for the second year in a row and implied in a resolution on human rights in Syria, “affirms the positive outcome of the third donors conference - and the way Kuwait dealt with repercussions of the Syrian crisis at the humanitarian level. “Kuwait has become an example to be followed in dealing with humanitarian crises.” The UNHCR, in a resolution adopted late on Thursday, welcomed the conference’s results, expressing appreciation for speedy response on part of the donating nations, as well as honoring previous pledges in this respect. Humanitarian campaign Meanwhile, Kuwait’s Higher Committee for Syrian Refugees Relief yesterday began a new phase of a staged humanitarian campaign to relieve war-stricken Syrians, distributing USD 100,000 worth of food parcels to the refugees. The food supplies, destined for Syrians in need in Amman, Al-Mefreq and AlAqaba, are being handed over under supervision of a field committee comprising representatives of the International Islamic Charitable Organization (Jordan), the Kuwaiti Social Reform Society, the Jordanian AlTakaful Society and the Jordanian Donors Society. Fahad Al-Rashidi, the head of the Kuwaiti expedition, told KUNA during launch of the campaign in Amman that it had actually began last winter, expressing gratitude to the Kuwaiti donors and His Highness the Amir for guiding such humanitarian action.
