Not being perfect, as human beings, does not mean we should stop seeking and demanding perfection. Unfortunately, some, or even most of us, randomly mix various concepts regardless of truths. Those ‘some’ I am talking about have been confusing the ‘state’ and the ‘nation’ and cannot even tell the difference between them both.

Whenever we write criticizing some government decision or a bad real life situation resulting from a bad government decision, lots of the victims of this ‘confusion’ immediately question our patriotism and consider that we have relinquished it. As it is difficult to have people give up certain ideologies or false assumptions, and because I strongly believe in this fact, I stopped arguing with any of those I believe to be victimized by such false ideas. I bear with their opinions, and maybe ridicule or insults, without uttering a single word, because I am sure I would never manage to undo the effect of their false ideas, separation from real life and incapability to cut loose with the narrow and shallow perception they have leashed themselves and their minds to.

Loving my nation and patriotism does not mean dancing in the ‘government’s nightclub’ or walking over its circus tightropes. It does not mean applauding everything it does or to be infatuated by the voice of its official spokesperson while reading us the decisions it made and will make. As citizens, we are more keen on our nation than the government. We are the government’s partners in a nation more owned by us than by them.

Patriotism is an emotional attachment to a nation and homeland, not to governments. The fact that governments are replaceable while nations are everlasting and fixed proves this. A nation is our ancestors’ legacy as well as the inheritance we are going to leave to our children and grandchildren. Whenever we seek perfection of our nation, we must not necessarily achieve it, yet clinging to hopes of achieving such perfection is still far much better than being attached to nation-damaging bad real-life situations. Being against certain unfair and unconstitutional laws or decisions that fail to achieve national unity and jeopardize people’s liberties does not mean I am not patriotic. On the contrary, I would be disloyal to my nation if I accept such situations and applaud them. Though I am sure I have satisfactorily refuted such allegations and provided advice to people with deaf ears, I do this out of disclaiming their allegations!
