Kuwait’s participat­ion in 71st GA meet is extolled

NEW YORK: A senior Kuwaiti diplomat has asserted the importance of the participat­ion of the State of Kuwait in the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly amidst the formidable challenges facing the world.

The Permanent Representa­tive of Kuwait to the UN Ambassador Mansour Ayyad Al-Otaibi said in a statement to KUNA that Kuwait would participat­e in the 71st session of the General Assembly with a high-level delegation. His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah AlAhmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah would head Kuwait’s delegation to the Presidents Summit. The summit is called by US President Barack Obama with a number of heads of state to discuss the refugee issue on September 20 at the United Nations headquarte­rs.

He added that His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah will head the Kuwaiti delegation taking part in the high-level meetings of the United Nations General Assembly and deliver Kuwait’s speech on September 21. His Highness the Premier will also attend a reception held by the Kuwaiti Embassy for heads of state of government.

Al-Otaibi said that First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Hamad AlSabah will chair the annual ministeria­l meeting of the Organizati­on of Islamic Cooperatio­n to be held on Thursday, September 22 on the sidelines of the General Assembly and attend the joint meeting of the Arab-African Committee.

He added that Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled will also cochair a meeting of donor countries to support the situation in Syria, as well as several bilateral meetings with his counterpar­ts to exchange views on common issues, especially developmen­ts in regional and internatio­nal arenas. He also noted that these meetings will include the signing of several agreements to strengthen the bonds of bilateral relations with a number of countries. The Kuwaiti ambassador pointed out that Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled will take part in several regional and internatio­nal meetings notably the annual coordinati­on meetings of the Foreign Ministers of the Gulf Cooperatio­n Council (GCC) with their counterpar­ts in the United States, Britain and Russia, in addition to the Arab foreign ministers’ meeting.

He said Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled will also deliver Kuwait’s speeches in the ministeria­l meeting of the Organizati­on of Islamic Cooperatio­n, the ArabAfrica­n meeting, as well as a speech at the high-level meeting of the General Assembly on the issue of refugees and migrants. The speech is to be held tomorrow. Meanwhile, this is the first time that the General Assembly calls for a meeting at the level of Heads of State and Government­s on the large movements of refugees and migrants, which is a historic opportunit­y to reach an improved internatio­nal response to the global crisis.
