Place of birth does not matter

- By Saleh Al-Shayeji

It is virtue that has kept life going for so long and has maintained the existence of mankind. Otherwise, all people would have vanished and life would have stopped. Good and virtue knows no siblings, fellow-citizens or people with the same beliefs or races. It flies around without wings covering the entire earth and landing in people’s hearts.

With the increase of Syrians displaced and forced out of their country into Western countries; be that in Europe or America, people in those countries received refugees holding welcome signs that read: “It does not matter where you were born, but we are happy that you are our neighbors!” They also put similar signs near the houses inhabited by a refugee family to make them feel welcomed by natives expressing their joy to have them around.

We do need such a beautiful virtuous spirit in the Arab and Muslim world. We need it in our souls in which all forms of virtue have grown dry and made way to evil, hate and exclusion of others. We, the ones who have been bragging about our religious, cultural and racial heritage; the ones who have filled the world by talking about our human values, manners, helping people in distress and feeding the hungry, have been doing nothing but talking. We did nothing and seem to be incapable of doing anything. So, we left other nations that we claim have no manners, values, mercy or passion do such tasks.

Where on earth are our manners and values we have been bragging about for centuries? What if the destruction, wars and devastation that happened to some Arab and Muslim countries had happened to a Western or Eastern one; would we receive them in the same way? Would we feed, dress and secure them in safe houses telling them that “It does not matter where you were born, but we are happy that you are our neighbors!” Or would we rejoice with their crisis and celebrate it praying to God Almighty to befall more devastation and destruction on them? Unfortunately, that is who we are and that is who they are.—Translated by Kuwait Times
