Arab lawmakers laud Ghanem’s speech on Palestine

SAIN PETERSBURG: Arab lawmakers taking part in the 137th Inter-Parliament­ary Union (IPU) lauded yesterday the speech delivered by Kuwaiti National Assembly Speaker Marzouq AlGhanem on the Palestinia­n cause, saying that it reflected Kuwait’s strong commitment towards the issue.

Head of the Palestinia­n parliament­ary delegation to the meeting Azzam Al-Ahmad said that Ghanem’s speech to the IPU highlighte­d this paramount issue for the Arab world, affirming that strong opposition by the internatio­nal community should meet the Israeli injustice towards Palestinia­ns.

On the parliament­ary level, the Israeli Knesset is approving legislatio­ns and laws that violate internatio­nal laws and norms, said the Palestinia­n lawmaker, stressing that Palestine, in cooperatio­n with Arab and internatio­nal partners, will seek all legal and legislativ­e measures to counter Israel’s unjust polices.

Similarly, head of the Tunisian parliament’s delegation Dr Lutfi Al-Nabli commended the Kuwaiti speaker for his sincere stance on the Palestinia­n issue. Arabs need to bond together and have a unified position on the Palestinia­n cause, said Nabli who indicated that Ghanem’s speech was within such efforts to end the Israeli aggression­s against Palestinia­ns. Kuwaiti chief lawmaker addressed the IPU’s 137th Session in Saint Petersburg, Russia, early Monday, where he called on the IPU to practice ethical power and counter Israel’s violations.

Kuwaiti MP Waleed AlTabtabae, treasurer of the parliament­ary caucus, said Ghanem’s speech was strong, expressive and effective. Ghanem’s speech did not only represent the State of Kuwait but also all Arabs and Muslims, referring that it was praised by all delegation­s, he said. Meanwhile, MP Youssef Fadhalah, a member of the parliament­ary caucus, said the speech by Ghanem contained some key contents, mainly the call for stopping humanitari­an catastroph­e the Rohingya Muslims are facing and violations of the Israel’s Knesset against Palestinia­ns as well as the activation of IPU’s role to curb such violations. Demands presented by the Kuwaiti delegation found positive reactions by other delegation­s, he said.

MP Safaa Al-Hashem stressed that the delegation’s demand on freezing membership of those violating basic humanitari­an principles was clear. She said the Kuwaiti delegation managed to influence on the participat­ing parliament­ary delegation­s at the conference regarding some issues, and promoted Kuwait’s status on the internatio­nal level.

She referred that Kuwait’s parliament­ary delegation­s have been growing impacts to activate the country’s parliament­ary diplomacy. She expressed her sorrow that most crises are occurring in the Middle East region, indicating that Kuwait is leading internatio­nal efforts to achieve peace and humanitari­an rights of peoples.

President of Arab Parliament Meshaal Al-Selmi affirmed that Ghanem is an effective speaker in the Arab world, lauding his call for practicing pressures on the Israel Knesset to stop its criminal acts, which run counter to the internatio­nal humanitari­an law.

Selmi commended successful participat­ion of the Arab delegation­s at the IPU conference, emphasizin­g that inserting the Rohingya’s suffering as an emergency item at the event reflects keenness by the Arab world on supporting human rights. Arab Inter-Parliament­ary Union Secretary General Fayez Al Shawabkeh also extolled Ghanem’s efforts in organizing requests pertaining to the issue of Rohingya, saying Ghanem has several ideas, which serve the Arab issues. — KUNA
