Arab lawmakers laud Ghanem’s speech on Palestine
SAIN PETERSBURG: Arab lawmakers taking part in the 137th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) lauded yesterday the speech delivered by Kuwaiti National Assembly Speaker Marzouq AlGhanem on the Palestinian cause, saying that it reflected Kuwait’s strong commitment towards the issue.
Head of the Palestinian parliamentary delegation to the meeting Azzam Al-Ahmad said that Ghanem’s speech to the IPU highlighted this paramount issue for the Arab world, affirming that strong opposition by the international community should meet the Israeli injustice towards Palestinians.
On the parliamentary level, the Israeli Knesset is approving legislations and laws that violate international laws and norms, said the Palestinian lawmaker, stressing that Palestine, in cooperation with Arab and international partners, will seek all legal and legislative measures to counter Israel’s unjust polices.
Similarly, head of the Tunisian parliament’s delegation Dr Lutfi Al-Nabli commended the Kuwaiti speaker for his sincere stance on the Palestinian issue. Arabs need to bond together and have a unified position on the Palestinian cause, said Nabli who indicated that Ghanem’s speech was within such efforts to end the Israeli aggressions against Palestinians. Kuwaiti chief lawmaker addressed the IPU’s 137th Session in Saint Petersburg, Russia, early Monday, where he called on the IPU to practice ethical power and counter Israel’s violations.
Kuwaiti MP Waleed AlTabtabae, treasurer of the parliamentary caucus, said Ghanem’s speech was strong, expressive and effective. Ghanem’s speech did not only represent the State of Kuwait but also all Arabs and Muslims, referring that it was praised by all delegations, he said. Meanwhile, MP Youssef Fadhalah, a member of the parliamentary caucus, said the speech by Ghanem contained some key contents, mainly the call for stopping humanitarian catastrophe the Rohingya Muslims are facing and violations of the Israel’s Knesset against Palestinians as well as the activation of IPU’s role to curb such violations. Demands presented by the Kuwaiti delegation found positive reactions by other delegations, he said.
MP Safaa Al-Hashem stressed that the delegation’s demand on freezing membership of those violating basic humanitarian principles was clear. She said the Kuwaiti delegation managed to influence on the participating parliamentary delegations at the conference regarding some issues, and promoted Kuwait’s status on the international level.
She referred that Kuwait’s parliamentary delegations have been growing impacts to activate the country’s parliamentary diplomacy. She expressed her sorrow that most crises are occurring in the Middle East region, indicating that Kuwait is leading international efforts to achieve peace and humanitarian rights of peoples.
President of Arab Parliament Meshaal Al-Selmi affirmed that Ghanem is an effective speaker in the Arab world, lauding his call for practicing pressures on the Israel Knesset to stop its criminal acts, which run counter to the international humanitarian law.
Selmi commended successful participation of the Arab delegations at the IPU conference, emphasizing that inserting the Rohingya’s suffering as an emergency item at the event reflects keenness by the Arab world on supporting human rights. Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union Secretary General Fayez Al Shawabkeh also extolled Ghanem’s efforts in organizing requests pertaining to the issue of Rohingya, saying Ghanem has several ideas, which serve the Arab issues. — KUNA
