Wembley officially opened at BSK

-

The British Ambassador to Kuwait Michael Davenport visited The British School of Kuwait (BSK) to officially open ‘Wembley,’ the landmark covered sports area at the North of the BSK campus. Welcomed by Head Boy, Yousef Mahmoud, Head Girl, Rodina Gad, Principal Paul Shropshire and members of the Strategic Management Team, the crisp morning air was ideal weather for the visit.

For many years a desert car park, Wembley is now the venue for PE lessons, Sports Days and break times, as well as the daily morning gathering of students in Years 1 and 2 prior to going to their classes at the start of the day. Always busy, always bright and dry, this is the perfect place for students to expend energy. Accompanied by his wife, Dr Lavinia Davenport, the Ambassador was given a tour of the campus, taking in familiar places including the Marble Arch sports and games area, Chequers which accommodates the Sixth Form Center and the Euston Art Gallery where the Ambassador was duly impressed by the work on display.

On to Wembley, the party were joined by students from Reception and Year 1 who acted as hosts for the official part of the visit; Omar Qasim of Year 1 assisted the Ambassador with unveiling the plaque and cutting the ribbon, the ceremony taking place in Wembley Way in the familiar surroundings of a Georgian street scene and London Underground tube-station. There is definitely a corner of BSK that will forever be London.

Heather Holsgrove, Principal of The Sunshine Kindergarten (TSK) greeted the Ambassador for the tour of the Creche and KG. Holsgrove explained the importance of play as part of learning, exemplified by the bright classrooms and variety of activities ranging from role play, building with blocks and experimenting with sand. In teaching children of this age, it is important that they enjoy what they do, with discovery, cooperation and play integral to the learning journey for the very youngest students. Made to feel welcome by children of all ages, both in BSK and TSK, the Ambassador and his wife talked at length with students about their experiences at school in Kuwait. The visit concluded in the company of Madam Vera Al-Mutawa, the Founder and Director of BSK. Now in its 40th year, BSK’s Ruby Anniversary is another milestone in the history of Kuwait’s premier school.
