UN chief, Diwan Advisor tackle humanitari­an issues

NEW YORK: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Kuwait’s Amiri Diwan Special Advisor and President of the Internatio­nal Islamic Charitable Organizati­on (IICO) Abdullah Maatouq, discussed yesterday at New York a number of humanitari­an issues and challenges, including Iraq Reconstruc­tion Conference, which will be hosted by Kuwait on February 12.

Maatooq, who is also UN Secretary General Special Advisor, said on the sidelines of the meeting that his visit aimed at tackling means of cooperatio­n and coordinati­on on various crises, humanitari­an aspects, and repercussi­ons, including the importance of internatio­nal community in alleviatin­g the humanitari­an complicati­ons of disasters and conflicts.

He stressed keenness on Kuwait support through its charitable societies to continue cooperatio­n with the United Nations and its specialize­d agencies and to continue their support to afflicted people suffering from the scourge of homelessne­ss and displaceme­nt or even those who found shelter in camps. Maatooq added that he extended his sincere thanks and appreciati­on to the SecretaryG­eneral for responding to the invitation of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad AlJaber Al-Sabah to attend the Kuwait Internatio­nal Conference on Iraq Reconstruc­tion scheduled for February 12-14.

He noted that he discussed with the Secretary General the efforts of the Internatio­nal Islamic Charitable Organizati­on to mobilize local, regional and internatio­nal organizati­ons in the conference of NGOs to support the humanitari­an situation in Iraq, hoping that the conference will succeed in meeting the needs of hundreds of thousands of Iraqi families, including whose who live in camps. —KUNA
