Kuwait participates in 15th meeting of Senior Donors to Syria
ISTANBUL: Kuwait reiterated its keenness to exert more humanitarian efforts to alleviate suffering of the Syrian people. Assistant Foreign Minister for International Organizations Nasser Al-Hayyen expressed great pleasure in Kuwait’s participation at the 15th meeting of the Group of Senior Donors to Syria in Istanbul. In his speech during the meeting, Hayyen said that Kuwait took the initiative to host the first nine meetings where it had a great impact on highlighting the suffering of the Syrian people, refugees and displaced persons, as well as efforts of neighboring countries in hosting them and providing all means to ensure their human dignity.
Kuwait is convinced that the human suffering in Syria could not be ended immediately, and from its humanitarian and moral responsibilities, Kuwait worked through its non-permanent membership in the Security Council to draft resolution 2401, which demands a cessation of hostilities without delay for at least 30 consecutive days throughout Syria to facilitate delivery of humanitarian assistance to those in need. He also reiterated that Kuwait has fulfilled all its commitments to relieve the Syrian people, with a paid sum amounting to $1.6 billion, of which $300 million for each year from 2016 to 2018.
Moreover, Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development and Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Science are also signing memorandums of understanding in health and education projects with the countries hosting Syrian refugees, he said. He praised the efforts exerted by the UN Special Envoy for Humanitarian Affairs, Dr Ahmad Al-Muraikhi, for increasing the efficiency of humanitarian aid. He also thanked the Turkish government for hosting this humanitarian meeting, as well as the Syrian refugees. —KUNA
