South African Embassy, Kuwait Cricket hosts Nelson Mandela T-10 Memorial Championship

The South African Embassy in partnership with Kuwait Cricket, the official governing body of Cricket in the State of Kuwait, will host the Nelson Mandela T-10 Memorial Championship on February 8, 2019, at the Doha Entertainment City Cricket Ground. The Nelson Mandela Cricket Tournament is aimed at honouring the humanitarian values and centenary celebrations of the late former President of South Africa.

Nelson Mandela strongly believed in the power of sport to facilitate social cohesion and national reconciliation as reflected in one of his major quotes when he said: “Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. It speaks to the youth in a language they understand. Sport can create hope where once there was only despair.”

Notably, the Nelson Mandela Memorial Championship coincides with the festive month of February in Kuwait during which we all celebrate the National and Liberation days of the State of Kuwait under the able leadership of the Global Humanitarian Leader His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

Kuwait Cricket is an associate member of the International Cricket Council and a full member of the Asian Cricket Council and an affiliate of the Kuwait Olympic Committee. The association was founded in 1996. In 1946 the first cricket game was played in Kuwait in Magwa between employees of the Kuwait Oil Company and employees of contracting companies. Cricket is a one of the fastest developing sports in Kuwait.

The Nelson Mandela championship seeks to contribute to the promotion and growth of cricket in Kuwait. The South African Embassy and Kuwait Cricket invites all the sports loving people of Kuwait to come and enjoy an action packed day cricket and entertainment at the Doha Entertainment City Cricket Ground. The format of the Nelson Mandela T-10 Memorial Championship will be as follows:

T 10 Match 1: Kuwait U16 A vs Kuwait U16 B- 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm T 10 Match 2: Kuwait Women’s A vs Kuwait Women’s B - 2:00 pm 3:30 pm

T 10 Match 3: Embassies/Diplomats Team vs Kuwait Cricket Officials - 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm

T 10 Match 4: Kuwait U19 A vs Kuwait U19 B- 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm T 10 Match 5: Kuwait Men’s A vs Kuwait Men’s B- 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm Presentation Ceremony: 8:00 to 8:30 pm
