Napoli thump Torino, continue title march
MILAN: Victor Osimhen and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia were again the heroes for Napoli as Italy’s champions-elect thumped Torino 4-0 and moved a whopping 21 points clear at the Serie A summit. Nigeria striker Osimhen took his league-leading goal tally to 21 with two towering headers in each half with Kvaratskhelia’s 35th-minute penalty sandwiched inbetween.
Kvaratskhelia then laid on Tanguy Ndombele’s first Serie A goal in the 68th minute following great hold-up play from Osimhen as Napoli took another step towards a first league title since 1990 in front of an army of fans in Turin. It was their first away trip after the end of a two-month ban on travelling supporters following a motorway dust up with Roma fans in January. And they were on hand to see their team put in a typically dominant display which means at worst Napoli will be 18 points ahead of Inter Milan with 11 matches remaining, if Simone Inzaghi’s inconsistent side beat Juventus in Sunday’s big match.
Regardless it is only a matter of time before Napoli seal a historic title triumph, one which has come following a campaign of breathtaking football that has Osimhen convinced they can also win the Champions League. They would have to win an Italian derby with AC Milan the quarter-finals and potentially another with Inter in the last four to reach the final, but it would be hard to bet against a team which seems to have caught lightning in a bottle and then used it to fry everything its wake.
Once Kvaratskhelia rolled in his 14th goal of the season Torino offered up no resistance and dropped down to 11th, level on 37 points with Bologna and ninthplaced Fiorentina who won their seventh straight match in all competitions 1-0 over Lecce. Earlier Manolo Gabbiadini gave Sampdoria hope they might yet escape relegation from Serie A with both goals in Sunday’s 3-1 win over fellow strugglers Verona.
Forward Gabbiadini struck twice in the first half at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris to help lift Samp off the bottom of the table into 19th place with their first win since January. Dejan Stankovic’s side are nine points behind Spezia, who sit just outside the drop zone and lost 1-0 at Sassuolo on Friday, after Gabbiadini poked home the opener in the 24th minute before lashing home the second 11 minutes later. Zlatan Ibrahimovic became the oldest goalscorer in the history of Serie A on Saturday but couldn’t stop AC Milan from falling to a 3-1 defeat at Udinese. Ibrahimovic, 41, was in Milan’s starting lineup for the first time since January last year and smashed home a penalty at the second attempt in first-half stoppage time to make the score 1-1 following Roberto Pereyra’s ninth-minute opener. But it wasn’t enough to stop fourth-placed Milan from losing their fourth match away from home in their last five and miss the chance to move provisionally second in Italy’s top flight.
Stefano Pioli’s team stay fourth, two points behind local rivals Inter Milan in second in the race for the Champions League. They will drop out of the top four if Roma win the Rome derby with Lazio on Sunday evening while Inter face fierce rivals Juventus hoping to steal a march on their rivals for Europe’s top club competition. “When a team plays like this it means the coach hasn’t done his job. We played way below our standard,” Pioli told Sky. “We not in a good position in the league and getting into the top four is so important for us... We’ve not done enough over the last few weeks.”
Wearing the captain’s armband Ibrahimovic missed his first spot-kick but was given a second chance when Beto was penalized for encroachment, and thumped his shot down the middle of the goal. At 41 years and 166 days old Ibrahimovic overtook former AC Milan defender Alessandro Costacurta-who also netted against Udinese in 2007 aged 41 - as the oldest scorer in Italy’s top flight. He had previously made three substitute appearances this season after being sidelined since May last year, following reconstructive surgery on the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.
Udinese coach Andrea Sottil was sent off for his protests at the decision to award the penalty for a Jaka Bijol handball and then allow Ibrahimovic to retake following Marco Silvestri’s brilliant save. But Sottil’s side were ahead at the break as Beto made up for his earlier error by finishing off Isaac Success’ low cross on the stroke of half-time. And Kingsley Ehizibue made sure of Udinese’s second win in as many league matches, just their third since early October, stealing in at the back post to poke in Destiny Udogie’s mishit shot. — AFP
