Labor crisis needs quick resolution
Not long ago, a crisis erupted in the relationship between Kuwait and the Philippines regarding work permits for Filipinos. This crisis stemmed from a tragic accident involving a Filipino woman. We ask for her forgiveness and mercy from God. Following this incident, there was understandable anger from the political leadership in the Philippines. Every official in their country is held accountable by the people for measures taken regarding their citizens abroad.
Subsequently, conditions were imposed that affected the agreement between Kuwait and the Philippines. Some were deemed by Kuwaiti officials to infringe upon their sovereignty. As a result, Kuwait halted the granting of work licenses to Filipinos, causing a significant crisis for both nations. Filipino workers have made invaluable contributions to Kuwait across various sectors, and their absence has been keenly felt.
The incident involving the Filipino citizen was a tragic occurrence, as determined by fate, and not indicative of typical behaviors. However, the Philippines government held the Kuwaiti government responsible for the incident and set conditions that Kuwait deemed unacceptable and contradictory to their agreements.
It’s imperative for both sides to resolve this issue amicably. The Philippines’ conditions were likely emotionally charged due to the incident, but it’s essential to address them sensibly without compromising Kuwait’s sovereignty. Kuwait has taken legal action against the perpetrators of the crime, demonstrating its commitment to justice. However, it’s regrettable that the support Kuwait provided to the Philippines seems forgotten in this situation. Kuwait has a long-standing tradition of being open and welcoming to people from all over the world. It’s crucial to maintain this reputation by resolving this crisis swiftly and respectfully.
Both Kuwait and the Philippines need to uphold the agreements established since 1979, ensuring that past cooperation and mutual respect continue to define their relationship. It’s essential for the Philippines to reconsider their stance and review the agreements between the two countries, understanding that this crisis is an anomaly in their otherwise positive relationship.
