Christ Redeemer to shine in Estonian flag colours in Rio
To honour the occasion of the 100th anniversary since the independence of Estonia was proclaimed, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the city signature Christ the Redeemer statue is set to be lit up in the colours of the Estonian flag. Estonia public broadcaster ERR reports that Ramiru dos Santos, the Second Secretary at the Brazilian Embassy in Tallinn, has said that the embassy suggested the idea with the city and others since they believed that the celebration of the Republic of Estonia’s centennial was a good occasion to bring the two far-off countries closer to each other.
Rio’s Christ the Redeemer statue, which often has its lights adjusted to internationally important events, will shine in the colours of the Estonian national flag from 7 to 8 p.m. on on February 24.
Designed by French-Polish sculptor Paul Landowski the 30-metre-tall statue was constructed between 1922 and 1931 and has become the symbol of Rio de Janeiro.
