Noord Natie develops a new business niche – attracts cruise ships for Ventspils

The first of the cruise ships attracted from SIA Noord Natie Ventspils Terminals will arrive at Ventspils port this week. NNVT stresses that development of cruise business as a new product will help develop tourism in the city and region, as well as provide a contribution to economic development and raise recognition of NNVT terminal and the city.

NNVT representatives say that the cruise business so far has been inactive in Ventspils. This is because there are no institutions or businesses that perform attraction of cruise lines and coordination of activities among involved sides to ensure their success in Ventspils. Ships of different cruise organizers did stop not far from Ventspils pier not long ago. However, because it is not fully compatible with such ships, NNVT commenced a new initiative for attraction of cruise ships a couple of years ago.

«Two years ago we became fully-fledged members of Cruise Europe, which has provided us with information circulation and selfpromotion options using media and expos,» says NNVT Commercial Department manager Artis Šenkevics. The terminal, together with cooperation partners has performed talks with well-known cruise ship operators to outline Ventspils port on their maps and use its excellent geographical location, infrastructure and the company’s rich experience with passenger services. The flow of tourists travelling to Sweden via ferry exceeds 130,000, the company continues.

«Cruise lines plan their routes and ports two to three years in advance. As a result of our efforts and resources we have put in, cruise ship captains already use our terminal for the advantages it offers in passenger services. In addition to pier parameters, our infrastructure is compatible with ships with a length 240 m and deep draft of 14.2 m. Foreign tourists visit popular attractions, travel to the city’s beaches and visit Europe’s widest waterfall in Kuldiga. We have outlined arrivals of eight such ships in Ventspils in our calendar,» says Šenkevics.

The first to enter Ventspils port will be Anadea cruise ship owned by popular German Phoenix Reisen. It will be arriving in Ventspils around afternoon on 18 August.

Noble Caledonia will send its small and unique Serenissima cruise ship on 20 August. The ship is scheduled for arrival in the morning at around 08:00.

Seabour Vation – a floating five-star hotel – will be arriving at NNVT pier at 09:00 in the morning on 24 August. This is a brand new ship. It was commissioned in May 2018. It will carry 600 passengers from Britain to Ventspils, NNVT representatives say.
