The out-of-family support centres Liepāja and Dūja, planned for Riga, as offered by the NGO Sociālo pakalpojumu aģentūra, have been confirmed by the Ministry of Welfare.

The upcoming centres would be tasked with looking for accepting families to children not cared for by their parents.

The Ministry stated on Thursday, August 30, that they would also ensure training and psychological-social support to foster families, guardians, guest families and adopters and conduct the psychological research of the families, as well as calculate and make payments to specialised foster families.

«Support to families must be targeted – it can be also a necessary service or a different kind of support. It is important to have both the overall support system for the family and accessible and professional out-of-family care, if it is necessary for the interests of the child,» commented the Latvian Minister of Welfare, Jānis Reirs.
