Latvian petition to spend centenary money on cancer treatment reaches MPs
The Latvian popular petition to spend on cancer treatment the funding intended for the celebrations of the centenary of Latvia, has reached the Saeima and legislators will view the initiative in the parliament’s Mandate, Ethics and Submissions Committee.
The Saeima Press Service reported on Tuesday, August 28, that this initiative on the online petition platform Manabalss.lv has attracted the support of more than 10 000 people, who have signed it electronically.
The author of the plan, Alvils Puričs-Aurels, reasoned in the description of the initiative published in November, 2017, that Latvia had earmarked 60 million euros for the festive events for the year of the centenary, while Finland had spent «only 19 million» on its 100th birthday.
Puričs-Aurels believes that the funds should be spent on compensating more effective cancer medications and increase the funding of oncological surgeries and chemotherapy as patients often turn to donation platforms to ask for help and money for treatment abroad.
