Judge Egils Levits of the Court of Justice of the European Union may consider becoming a candidate for the post of president of Latvia if such an offer was extended to him.

In an interview to Rīta panorama programme of LTV, Levits stressed that it is too soon to consider such a possibility. On top of that, he said this is a question not for him, but rather for political parties forming the coalition and the government. They are the ones who will decide on the state president. If parties do extend an offer for Levits to become a presidential candidate, he would consider the offer. According to Levits, his first attempt was more of a principle matter. He says he knew in advance he’d have no chances of winning. Current Latvian President Raimonds Vējonis’ term ends in summer 2019. He might decide to participate in presidential elections again for a second term.
