Lithua­nia be­hind Latvia, Es­to­nia on Eu re­gions in­dex

Lithua­nia is be­hind Latvia and Es­to­nia on the lat­est com­pet­i­tive­ness in­dex of Euro­pean Union (EU) re­gions, while in com­par­i­son to other sim­i­lar EU re­gions, the coun­try’s rat­ings are worse in terms of busi­ness de­vel­op­ment, health and in­fra­struc­ture. Ac­cord­ing to the EU Re­gional Com­pet­i­tive­ness In­dex pub­lished by the Euro­pean Com­mis­sion on Tues­day, Lithua­nia, as a re­gion, scored 34.2 points out of 100 and ranked 194th among 263 re­gions. In this year’s in­dex, Latvia se­cured 35.1 points and ranked 191st, and Es­to­nia got 53.9 points and was 141st. On the EU level, re­gions got an av­er­age of 55 points. As com­pared with 15 other re­gions with a sim­i­lar gross do­mes­tic prod­uct (GDP) per capita, Lithua­nia ranks the worst in terms of busi­ness de­vel­op­ment (243rd), health (259th) and in­fra­struc­ture (227th). Mean­while, Lithua­nia came in rel­a­tively high in the cat­e­gory of higher ed­u­ca­tion and life­long learn­ing (79th).
