Six per­sons deemed as sus­pects in 200 mil­lion euro scan­dal

Six per­sons have been deemed as sus­pects in the EUR 200 mil­lion prom­is­sory note scan­dal in­volv­ing the Liel­varde Re­gional Coun­cil, the State Po­lice in­forms. How­ever, none have been taken into the cus­tody as a se­cu­rity mea­sure.

This crim­i­nal process per­tains to a 2015 in­ci­dent, when the then chair­man of the Liel­varde Re­gional Coun­cil uni­lat­er­ally signed a EUR 200 mil­lion prom­is­sory note on be­half of the mu­nic­i­pal­ity for a deal which did not ex­ist.

15 sanc­tioned searches have since taken place in con­nec­tion with the crim­i­nal process.

As re­ported, Ja­nis Abolins (Vidzeme Party) re­signed as Liel­varde mayor in De­cem­ber 2015 af­ter Liel­varde Re­gion Coun­cil asked the au­thor­i­ties to look into Abolins' ac­tions. Ac­cord­ing to Liel­varde Re­gion Coun­cil's re­port, for­mer mayor Abolins, in vi­o­la­tion of the law and reg­u­la­tions on bor­row­ing by mu­nic­i­pal­i­ties, uni­lat­er­ally signed a EUR 200 mil­lion prom­is­sory note on be­half of the mu­nic­i­pal­ity in Novem­ber 2015.
