Six persons deemed as suspects in 200 million euro scandal
Six persons have been deemed as suspects in the EUR 200 million promissory note scandal involving the Lielvarde Regional Council, the State Police informs. However, none have been taken into the custody as a security measure.
This criminal process pertains to a 2015 incident, when the then chairman of the Lielvarde Regional Council unilaterally signed a EUR 200 million promissory note on behalf of the municipality for a deal which did not exist.
15 sanctioned searches have since taken place in connection with the criminal process.
As reported, Janis Abolins (Vidzeme Party) resigned as Lielvarde mayor in December 2015 after Lielvarde Region Council asked the authorities to look into Abolins' actions. According to Lielvarde Region Council's report, former mayor Abolins, in violation of the law and regulations on borrowing by municipalities, unilaterally signed a EUR 200 million promissory note on behalf of the municipality in November 2015.
