The Middle East’s only fashion foundation was started in 2008 by Rabih Kayrouz and Tala Hajjar, to help emerging designers learn how to run a business and acquire the skills needed to make it successful. Turn to p.82. When we decided to delve into a supplement on philanthropy, we quickly realised that we had stepped onto an endless field of causes ranging from saving the environment to eradicating global poverty and so we had to find a way of narrowing down our focus. In the end, we found the best way to delimit this ocean of beneficence was to look at it all through the lens of luxury lifestyle – in other words, designer brands that were either developing their own foundations or fostering unusual collaborations in order to help make the world a better place. During our journey of discovery, we came across a report by Barclays Wealth, which stated that the human race is on the cusp of a global age of philanthrophy, helped to a large extent by a new wave of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), as well as the deep pockets of the luxury industry. This actually helped us hone our selection even further, as we didn’t want to get bogged down by the luxury industry’s CSR practices. Finally, our last filter was having to remove a few commendable stories that we had already run them in the past. We apologise about that – you know who you are. Without further ado, we present our supplement and remember, no one has ever become poor from giving.
