Tiny Canvas An enamel masterpiece by Piaget
Although you’d probably never normally think of wearing art on your wrist, Piaget’s spectacular miniature paintings might make you reconsider. The 143-year-old company’s ‘Secrets & Lights’ collection comprises 38 limited edition watches, including this one, which took home the 2016 GPHG Artistic Crafts Watch Prize. Named the Protocole XXL, it measures 42 by 46 millimetre, and depicts the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute. But the real magic is how it’s made. The artist, Cesare Bella, used a special technique of micro mosaics to create a flawless vintage Venetian scene comprised of 5,000 tiny glass tiles, individually made and placed on the dial and the adjacent ‘spillway’. It’s an excruciatingly time-consuming process, hence only three of these 240,000 USD pieces will ever be made.
