Barry’s Bootcamp is more than a workout fad, it’s a lifestyle brand with gyms, clothing lines and juice bars. It started in West Hollywood in 1998, and is now present in seven countries, including, most recently, the UAE, which it hopes will serve as a springboard for further expansion across the Middle East. Don’t bet against that happening either, as their’s is a unique product with an incredibly high return rate among first-timers. The 50-minute classes are led by a single motivating instructor who keeps you and 53 other sweaty participants switching between running intervals on treadmills and working your core with weights at floor stations. But with lighting that’s dim, red and sexy, and music that’s loud and pulsating, you’d be forgiven for wondering if you’d entered an imaginary nightclub rather than a gym. That’s half the attraction of course. Well, that and the fact you burn over 1,000 calories per class.
