Barry’s Boot­camp is more than a work­out fad, it’s a life­style brand with gyms, cloth­ing lines and juice bars. It started in West Hol­ly­wood in 1998, and is now present in seven coun­tries, in­clud­ing, most re­cently, the UAE, which it hopes will serve as a spring­board for fur­ther ex­pan­sion across the Mid­dle East. Don’t bet against that hap­pen­ing ei­ther, as their’s is a unique prod­uct with an in­cred­i­bly high re­turn rate among first-timers. The 50-minute classes are led by a sin­gle mo­ti­vat­ing in­struc­tor who keeps you and 53 other sweaty par­tic­i­pants switch­ing be­tween run­ning in­ter­vals on tread­mills and work­ing your core with weights at floor sta­tions. But with light­ing that’s dim, red and sexy, and mu­sic that’s loud and pul­sat­ing, you’d be for­given for won­der­ing if you’d en­tered an imag­i­nary night­club rather than a gym. That’s half the attraction of course. Well, that and the fact you burn over 1,000 calo­ries per class.
