Aoun awards medal to out­go­ing UNIFIL head

BEIRUT: Pres­i­dent Michel Aoun Mon­day granted the Na­tional Or­der of the Cedar to Maj. Gen. Michael Beary, the out­go­ing com­man­der of the U.N. In­terim Force in Le­banon, dur­ing a farewell visit at Baabda Palace. Aoun thanked Beary for his ef­forts dur­ing his two-year term, and awarded him the medal in ap­pre­ci­a­tion, a state­ment from the pres­i­dent’s of­fice re­ported. The Na­tional Or­der of the Cedar is the high­est state or­der of Le­banon and is of­fered in five grades. Beary was awarded the Com­man­der’s badge. Beary in turn thanked Aoun for his sup­port, ex­press­ing hopes co­op­er­a­tion would con­tinue with his suc­ces­sor, Italian Maj. Gen. Ste­fano Del Col. Aoun re­it­er­ated Le­banon had asked to ex­tend UNIFIL’s man­date for an ad­di­tional year with­out any amend­ments to its func­tions or bud­get. –
