Over 500 Syrian refugees return home


BEIRUT: Over 500 Syrian refugees left Lebanon for Syria Thursday in the latest return process organized by General Security, the agency reported. The agency said in a statement that it had organized the voluntary return of 545 Syrian refugees from different Lebanese areas through the Abboudieh, Masnaa and Al-Zamarani border crossings. The process was carried out in coordinati­on with the U.N. refugee agency. “The displaced Syrians took their own vehicles and buses that were provided by the Syrian authoritie­s at gathering points in Masnaa, Burj Hammoud, Abboudieh and Arsal, accompanie­d by General Security patrol units to the Lebanese-Syrian border,” the statement said. The staterun National News Agency said a large number of refugees gathered at the Abboudieh checkpoint in the presence of UNHCR officials. It added that large buses provided by the Syrian government awaited them. The Syrian state-run SANA news agency said the buses arrived at the Syrian crossings of Jdeidet Yabous and Al-Zamarani and were on their way to the refugees’ hometowns. –
