Event to ad­dress women’s eco­nomic em­pow­er­ment

BEIRUT: A con­fer­ence fo­cused on the eco­nomic em­pow­er­ment of women in the Mid­dle East will be held next week in Beirut, the of­fice of Prime Min­is­ter-des­ig­nate Saad Hariri an­nounced Fri­day. The con­fer­ence, to be held on Jan. 19 un­der Hariri’s pa­tron­age, will in­clude rep­re­sen­ta­tives from the Jor­da­nian and Iraqi gov­ern­ments, in ad­di­tion to in­ter­na­tional NGOs, civil so­ci­ety mem­bers and other of­fi­cials. Par­tic­i­pants will ex­plore ways to in­crease women’s roles in state in­sti­tu­tions and pol­i­tics. “Mid­dle Eastern coun­tries have made sig­nif­i­cant gains in terms of women’s ac­cess to ed­u­ca­tion and health, though there are still chal­lenges re­lated to women’s eco­nomic op­por­tu­ni­ties, their vot­ing [rights] and their rep­re­sen­ta­tion,” the state­ment said, adding that the World Bank, In­ter­na­tional Mon­e­tary Fund and the Cana­dian gov­ern­ment will sup­port the coun­tries par­tic­i­pat­ing in the con­fer­ence to strengthen women’s eco­nomic em­pow­er­ment. “This con­fer­ence will also ex­plore how to cre­ate ways for the gov­ern­ments of Le­banon, Jor­dan and Iraq, in co­op­er­a­tion with the pri­vate sec­tor, civil so­ci­ety and de­vel­op­ment part­ners, to com­mit to this pro­gram,” the state­ment added. – The Daily Star
