Family bicycle paths

-

There is nothing like some exercise in the fresh air, surrounded by natural beauty, to rid the family of the stresses of school and work. These three trails offer different options.

Biking beginners can try the 30km trail that runs along the River Sûre through the Black Ernz valley. This bicycle trail in the heart of Mullerthal,

Luxembourg's Little Switzerland, starts at Heringer Millen and travels via Consdorf with a downward track through woodlands past the unusual rock formations for which the region is known. You can stop for lunch at Echternach, before heading back to the start point.

Families with younger children might prefer the 13km mountain bike trail around Bech, part of which runs along an old railway track.

The beauty of the vine-covered slopes and magnificent views of the meandering Moselle make the 22km Wine Tour bike

trail great for a family day out. The trail starts in Greveldange, climbing up the vineyard slopes before passing through dense forest. It traverses the fields of Stadtbredimus and a former castle that now houses the Vinmoselle Co-operative cellars.

Families can hone their mountain biking skills at the Bike Park Kaul in

Wiltz which also rents bikes, then head to Camping Lieler for a 12km circular, off-road cycle route that takes forest paths. The route passes the Monument of a United Europe and the Frein Forest.

For something a bit different, head to the Red Rock Region and Minett Park to rent four seat rail bikes known as

draisines. Cycling on former steam train tracks, the round trip takes 45 minutes and costs €10 per railbike. Each one accommodates four people, with any two cycling at one time.
