OMEGA STARS IN FIRST MAN

-

In Oscar-winning director Damien Chazelle’s First Man starring Ryan Gosling ‒ the riveting story behind the first manned mission to the moon, focusing on Neil Armstrong and the decade leading to the historic Apollo 11 flight ‒ Omega as a special guest star. In 1965, following NASA’s search for a watch for their space programmes, the Omega Speedmaster was officially found to be “Flight Qualified for all Manned Space Missions” and ultimately became the first watch worn on the moon in 1969. The manufacture has since continued to supply NASA with watches.

For the production of First Man, Omega supplied period-correct Speedmasters and other watches of that era. The Speedmaster ST 105.003 is worn by Gosling during his character’s Apollo training at NASA. In real life, it would also have been worn by Project Gemini’s astronaut Ed White in the first American spacewalk in 1965. The famous Moonwatch, the Speedmaster ST 105.012, is spotted on the actors portraying the Apollo 11 astronauts during their historic lunar landing. Gosling also wears the Omega wristwatch CK 2605, a timepiece from 1954, as Neil Armstrong did in his daily life. The film also sees a 1960s Omega stopwatch being used by the NASA engineers during training. As official timekeeper of the Olympic Games, Omega has a longstanding history in sports and precision timekeeping.
