FROM THE EDITOR...

Cycling Plus (Malaysia) - - WELCOME - Adam Aubrey, Editor

There has been an alarming rate of so called “OEM Bikes” flooding our market recently, and to us this is very bad news for the Malaysian cycling scene. OEM is widely known as an abbreviation of Original Equipment Manufacturer which is usually a product manufactured by companies which have been licensed to do so by the creators of the product.

It is most commonly seen in the automotive industry. In the bicycle world, OEM parts do exist, but as far as we know when it comes to whole bikes or bike frames, these so-called “OEM Bikes” have no credible manufacturers backing them up. The problem starts when people can’t tell the difference between an original and the OEM version. Whilst some sellers out there will be honest about what these bikes are, some might take advantage and charge a higher amount for them. A great example was when someone told us they grabbed a big brand bike for such a cheap price, just to find out later that it wasn’t even the real thing. Naturally, this caused the person heartbreak and probably robbed them of a good start to an exciting sport.

We say purchase a bike from a reputable company, or be extra vigilant when purchasing from a company you do not know. Apart from that, we are also proud to bring you our first mountain bike cover which accompanies our thrilling mountain bike of the year feature. We also bring you all the regular favourites in our New Kit section, featuring a hydraulic groupset and a pair of cool Oakley sunglasses, as well as a big Marin bikes feature in City Slickers on Page 54.

Till then, be vigilant and have a safe ride.
