ELLE (Malaysia) - - EDITOR'S NOTE - @kate_ellemy editor@elle.my

Around this time a year ago I was in New York being mesmerised by Michelle Williams and Jeff Daniels in Blackbird, a Broadway play that was by turns shocking, amusing and heart-wrenching. By the end of it I felt like I’d taken a wild rollercoaster ride, of the emotional kind, and looking around the audience I could see I wasn’t alone. I was sitting next to the editor of ELLE Australia, and we both turned to each other slackjawed, unable to find the words to describe what we’d just seen. It was an unforgettable performance by both actors, but as a committed Dawson’s Creek fan from back in the day (not to mention someone who has long aspired to, but never dared try, the peroxide pixie cut) I was especially starstruck by Michelle Williams.

Despite possessing the kind of starpower that can pull oceans, in this month’s cover story Williams comes across as about as normal as it’s possible for a Hollywood A-lister with such incredible talent to be. Part of the reason for that might be that she doesn’t live in Hollywood at all, eschewing it for a ‘real life’ with her daughter, Matilda, in Brooklyn. Michelle rarely gives interviews, so I feel very lucky that she chose ELLE to grant a glimpse into her life, as she readies for another big awards season.

You might have heard that Valentine’s Day is this month? Whether that means anything to you or not, I think you’re perfectly entitled to treat it as an opportunity to buy yourself some fierce new shoes (page 45) or dreamy lingerie (page 44; and who cares if you’re the only one who sees it?), or take yourself out on a date (suggestions on page 63). Being all loved up is great, but we think being single is something worth celebrating too, and we do so on page 58.

Finally, don’t miss our ELLE Style Awards coverage from page 29 (with a whole lot more at elle.my/styleawards)! We had such a fun night rewarding and recognising the leaders in Malaysia’s fashion industry. Congratulations to all our winners, and especially to Malaysian Designer of the Year Khoon Hooi, a man who is as kind and generous as he is talented.

We had such a great night at the ELLE Style Awards presented by PANDORA in December. Here’s the team getting lost in the giant balloons on our backstage set. Catch our coverage from page 29.

Meeting Erdem was one of my highlights of 2016, and left me even more in awe of his talents. I mean, look at this dress... (page 47).

On page 90, some of the travel industry’s most influential people name the places to know and go in 2017. Personally, I’m hoping to spend a few nights at the marvellously maximalist Hôtel Maison Souquet in Paris’s Montmartre district.

Loewe’s S/S 2017 lilies are the elegant, slightly elegiac way for grown women to wear flowers as accessories. (page 22).

I can’t wait to thumb through this gorgeous coffee table book documenting the Gucci Cruise show at Westminster Abbey last year (page 62).

Letter writing is an art that I’ve almost lost, but I’ll be coaxing myself back into it with this beautiful Tiffany & Co. pen (page 27).

There are very few problems that a scented candle can’t help solve, especially one as prettily packaged as Diptyque Rosamundi (page 22).

These statement earrings from Saint Laurent let your ears do the talking for once (page 27).

The colour pay-off, the pointed tube and the very satisfying pen-like click are just some of the reasons I’ve fallen for By Terry Rouge-Expert Click Stick in Mystic Red. See the other red lipsticks ELLE loves on page 73.
