UP IN SMOKE Smouldering eyes get an update
Smoke is in the air this summer. Eternally alluring and endlessly customisable, a dark halo circling the eyes is a beauty classic, flattering on all eye shapes and skin tones. Smoky eyes emerged from kohl-rimmed ancient Egypt, but for fresh ideas, we suggest looking to the Spring/Summer 2017 runways. First up, Christopher Kane’s ethereal taupe haze. Not your garden variety smoke, this is a sheer coat of colour that adds depth without overpowering a tonal, beige-hued look. Meanwhile, good old dark rims were defined to a winged point behind Elie Saab’s retro-cool tinted sunglasses.
DianeKendaldemonstratedamasterfultakeatCarolinaHerrera, layering black and brown eye pencils, smudging them through the outer corners for a lifted shape and then setting the centre of the lid with a pewter-black shadow for extra dimension. Also combining finishes was Val Garland at Alberta Ferretti. Inspired by smoky eye-champion Kate Moss, she whipped up textural illusions of depth with eyeliners in cream (for a sheer veil), liquid (for razorsharp lines) and pencil (for a hit of rock & roll). Bored of black? See Giorgio Armani’s version, amped all the way up with mile-long lashes and a swipe of metallic blue. And for those en route to an island party, take a cue from the slick, shiny eyes at Baja East and melt your makeup before the heat does – simply run a little gloss over your kohl of choice. Just be sure to keep your skin clean and matte, and brows combed to steer clear of a greased pan effect.
