Going Beyond Traditional Education at The British International School of Kuala Lumpur

The British International School of Kuala Lumpur (BSKL) is one of the leading international schools in Kuala Lumpur offering contemporary British international education to students from Pre-Nursery through to Sixth Form (ages 2-18). Since opening in 2009, BSKL has become the school of choice for expatriate and Malaysian parents looking to provide their children with the highest levels of education. The school is now part of Nord Anglia Education (NAE), the world’s leading premium schools organisation, with 66 schools in 29 countries.

BSKL follows a globally respected curriculum based on the English National Curriculum, a well-structured and coherent progression to learning from early childhood all the way to university entrance through various stages. Throughout the core curricula and programmes, the school thinks beyond traditional education, encouraging students to develop a global mindset and nurture essential skills such as creativity, collaboration and resilience. Their educational approach enables every student to reach high levels of academic and social success. Students are confident, entrepreneurial learners and year on year, their standardised exam results exceed global averages.

BSKL views after school activities and enrichment as an integral part of a child’s education, and to that end offers a wide range of clubs that aim to introduce potential hobbies, develop particular sports, provide language learning or IT support and inspire an interest in areas that perhaps they would not be exposed to through the normal curriculum. Enrichment activities are compulsory for every child at the school and they are encouraged to strike a balance between active/sport and more intellectually inspiring programmes.

The school has three campuses - Lower, Junior and Secondary - which all sit on the same site in the neighbourhood of Bandar Utama, an attractive suburb about 25 minutes outside of the city centre. Students can enjoy impressive facilities including a 9-a-side covered sports field, three indoor sports halls, two swimming pools and two full size football fields. The music and performing arts programmes have a 650-seat theatre and over 20 specialist music and dance rooms. Three libraries cater for everyone with over 20,000 books and unique learning areas, and the latest technology features strongly throughout the school.

In September 2016, a new Secondary campus opened onsite, which provides a modern, spacious and stimulating environment for the older students, including the Sixth Form. The new campus incorporates the latest ideas and up-to-date features such as a 3D printing room and creative breakout spaces, creating one of a kind opportunities.

It is therefore not surprising to learn that in the last parent survey, 95% said they highly rate the look and feel of the building facilities and 92% said the school provides a stimulating learning environment for their child.

In an increasingly competitive market, BSKL remains one of the best international schools in Malaysia. It was graded “excellent in all areas of educational provision” in the most recent Independent Schools Inspectorate report; a result that is comparable to that of many top UK independent schools and is unprecedented in Malaysia.

The school is a member of COBIS and was one of the first schools in Asia to receive the COBIS Patron’s Accreditation. They are also members of FOBISIA, the Regional Federation of the leading British international schools in Asia; an accredited examination centre for University of Cambridge exams; and an awarding organisation of Edexcel’s GCSE and A Level examinations.

Being part of the NAE network allows BSKL to continue to strengthen its academic credentials and enhance learning through several key initiatives. This includes the Global Campus which connects 50,000 students around the world, and collaborations with the world’s best organisations including MIT, Juilliard and UNICEF ensuring that every child is prepared for the future.

Students at BSKL achieve excellent exam results, outperforming many of their UK counterparts. In the last academic year 75% of students achieved A*/A and 91% A*/B grades in all their (I)GCSE examinations.

A Level results were also outstanding with 61% achieving A*/A and 82% A*/B. Students gained impressive university placements including Oxford University, UCL, Imperial College, LSE, Royal Northern College of Music, Edinburgh, UC Berkeley, Yale-NUS, and Chinese University of Hong Kong, to name a few. These academic achievements are also matched by the younger Primary students in the SATS (Standardised Assessment Tests), with BSKL far outperforming the UK national average.

As well as academic achievement, students at BSKL also demonstrate social and personal success. The BSKL Award and International Award are two examples whereby students fulfil a set of challenges and demonstrate progress in areas outside of academia, including fitness, leadership, charitable work and global awareness. The school ensures pupils are exceptionally well prepared for the next stage of their education with the strength of character to match. As a result, pupils are more likely to develop ambitions and a sense of their own potential that is marked by a broad, global perspective in a rapidly changing world.
