YOUNG AND GIFTED

ONE LOOK AT HIS INSTAGRAM PROFILE OR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND YOU’LL SEE THAT CHRIS CHEW EXCELS IN PUTTING THE ‘A’ IN ADVENTURE. BUT WHAT EXACTLY DOES THE WORD MEAN TO THIS KL-BORN TRAVELLER? TAMMY CHAN FINDS OUT MORE.

Female (Malaysia) - - GUY TALK -

Chris might be from the smartphone generation aka Gen Z, but this self-taught freelance videographer and photographer is ready to break boundaries with his insane talent and show the world that age is just a number.

FEMALE: Can you walk us through your photography journey and how you got to where you are today? Chris: “I started making funny videos and skits because I’ve always enjoyed curating content for fun. After learning the basics of videography, I dove into photography and the rest is history.”

F: What is the biggest obstacle you face as a travel photographer?

C: “Being looked down by clients because of my age and hotels not allowing me to stay because 17 year olds are still considered minors. However, this is a challenge I love as it makes my travels more fun, and that’s how I turn them into an adventure.”

F: What’s your favourite shooting gig so far?

C: “This year I’ve had jobs in New York City, Bali, Hong Kong, Japan and China. But my favourite one has got to be travelling to NYC to shoot for a Singaporean client. Every corner of the city has a story and I got to meet The Chainsmokers, Casey Neistat and let my legs hang out of a helicopter over the gorgeous NYC skyline!”

F: Which is your dream destination to shoot in and why? C: “Iceland because it has the most amazing landscapes.”

F: What’s the most surreal thing you’ve done for the sake of one perfect shot?

C: “I used to love rooftopping, so in the past, I have done some insane climbs up to rooftops to get the shot I want. It’s obviously not the safest and I don’t recommend anyone to try it unless you have plenty of experience.”

F: What else do you like to do in your free time (that doesn’t involve a camera)?

C: “I’m a DJ. I play at parties, proms and events. I’m also a songwriter and musician when I’m free because I love to express my thoughts through music. Besides that, I’m currently a Performing Arts student at Sunway University.”

F: Name six attributes you’d include in a travel photographer’s starter pack.

C: “1. Have a good attitude. 2. Be different. 3. Have big dreams. 4. Work hard and don’t give up. 5. Build meaningful connections. 6. Create a balance between your work and personal life.”
