Find the perfect dress, and leave the rest to the wedding planner. By Cai Mei Khoo.

One of the most exciting things about planning a wedding is the search for that dream gown. A-line, mermaid, trumpet or ball gown, these are but a few things to consider – and that’s just the start of it. There’s also material and colour to choose. White and off-white might sound like pretty much the same thing but it all comes down to what you’re happy with. Offering custom-fit wedding gowns from internationally renowned brands such as Elie by Elie Saab, Zuhair Murad, Pronovias, and Annasul Y, Designer Bridal Room is on every bride’s list of must-visit bridal stores. Here, Hoi Lai Leng, general manager of Designer Bridal Room, offers 10 tips on choosing that special dress for an even more special occasion:

10 THINGS TO KNOW ...

1 Don’t take everyone you know dress shopping because you will never end up getting what you really want. Keep it to just two or three people who know you best. 2 Listen to the experts, be it the wedding planner, designer, or gown consultant. They have more experience than you do in dressing the bride so they know what they are talking about. 3 Do a little research before you go gown shopping so you have a rough idea of what you like and what you don’t. 4 Experiment. Try on different silhouettes and styles to discover what looks best on you. 5 Set a general budget for the gown and be frank about it so that the consultant can help you find the perfect dress that suits your budget. 6 Trust your instincts. It’s perfectly fine to get the gown you fell in love with at first try, even if it is your first time trying on a wedding gown. 7 Don’t try on too many dresses. The more you try, the more confused and stressed out you’ll get. Once there’s a gown you just can’t stop thinking about, that would be “the one”. 8 Don’t get pressured into getting a gown that everyone likes, except yourself. Be true to yourself because if you honestly like what you are wearing, it shows on your face. 9 What looks good in a photo might not look good on you. Always try on the gown to know for sure before making a decision. 10 Don’t be consumed by trends and the latest collections. You want a timeless wedding gown that you can pass down the generations.
