Mademoiselle Yulia In 24 Hours

The über-cool international Japanese DJ, designer, and stylist, shares her day, from the City of Lights to the Land of the Rising Sun.

7AM I’m usually up by 7 in the morning, especially when I am in Paris for fashion week. Most of the time, the first shows start around 9am, so I am up quite early to get ready and have breakfast. My favourite place to have breakfast in Paris is at Le Royal Monceau. It’s located within the city’s 8th arrondissement, and serves a vast selection of fresh croissants and fluffy omelettes. 8AM On any given day, it takes me just 30 minutes to do my hair and make-up. Back home, I have a traditional Japanese dresser, adorned with precious urushi lacquer. On it, I have my essentials like a YSL Beauté foundation, Diptyque’s Volutes, and Louis Vuitton’s Matière Noire perfume. If I have a day off, I’d bring my dog Oscar out for a walk. 9AM At Paris Fashion Week, I’m already at my first show. At this time, I like to keep myself very busy with an hourly schedule. Not only do I go to see runway shows, but I also keep myself occupied with fittings for brands, work on interviews with Japanese TV programmes, and visit other presentations. Last season, I attended Miu Miu, Dior, and Roger Vivier’s Spring/Summer ’19 shows, to name a few. 11AM When I’m not at fashion week, most of my days are spent working on various photo shoots, and writing a monthly column for a magazine, which focuses on modern architecture in Tokyo. 12.30PM Sometimes, when I’m not working, I like to visit the National Diet Library in Tokyo. This library is actually one of the largest libraries in the world. But if I’m not there, you can also find me at an anime café, otherwise known as kyara café in Japanese. These cafés are very popular among anime fans, and I often visit different ones for lunch with friends. 2PM Recently, I began working as a kimono stylist and had the pleasure of collaborating with Roger Vivier on its latest event in Tokyo, as part of the maison’s #HotelVivier pop-up tour. It was such a wonderful experience dressing modern Japanese icons such as dancer Ran Shou and calligraphy artist Cherry Jerrera in traditional kimonos. Speaking of traditional, I love visiting the quaint and romantic town of Kyoto when I have the time. It’s a beautiful place for me to recharge and unwind, and I usually come back to the hustle and bustle of Tokyo feeling refreshed. 4PM Although I love visiting museums wherever I go, I also try to catch a kabuki show every month. Kabuki is a classical Japanese dance-drama that is often known for its theatrical make-up. 7.30PM As a DJ, my evenings are usually spent spinning at fashion events—on, and off the fashion week calendar. If I’m lucky, I get to finish work early and head to an arcade with some of my friends. Otherwise, it’s full steam ahead until midnight. 1AM I’m a night owl, so at times I’d attend afterparties once I’m done D-Jing at events. Otherwise, trust that you’ll find me at a bar or karaoke with friends—that’s if I’m not already at home chilling out with Oscar.
