Keep Calm And Carry On
The Dior and Rimowa collaboration sees a perfect partnership between the French house and German LVMH-owned luxury luggage brand. By Sanjeeva Suresh.
With the help of Daniel Arsham’s architectural prowess, Kim Jones explored the notion of the relic and the creation of history in his dystopian, pastelpink coloured runway. But something else stood out in his Spring/Summer ’20 collection, a key accessory that would later become one of Dior Men’s most sought-after pieces by fans and travellers alike: the special-edition Dior x Rimowa bag. Almost a direct contradiction to Arsham’s surreal use of crumbling cement, the bag’s aluminium skin and sleek ombré hue are a futuristic juxtaposition that tied the collection together.
Inspired by a vintage Rimowa case from the early ’90s, the bag today has evolved thanks to a combination of craftsmanship and skilled expertise. The Dior and Rimowa collection (first unveiled at Paris Fashion Week Men’s back in June 2019) saw updated versions of its signature models. Standouts included the cabin suitcase, champagne case (specially created to hold a bottle of Dom Pérignon), hand case, and clutch. To incorporate Dior Oblique’s vibrant motif onto the bags, pigments were inscribed directly on the outer layer, resulting in a reflective tone and colour that doesn’t lose its shine over time. Moreover, the removable cross-body strap featuring the Dior signature only adds to the bag’s sex appeal.
Fast forward to 2020, the Dior x Rimowa aluminium personal clutch bags have become so highly prised that a reported 90 percent of them have sold out in Malaysia. With a tight restriction on cabin luggage, what better way to get around than carrying a bag that perfectly encapsulates modern travel luxury. Available at Dior Men
