Christian Dior was famously superstitious, putting his trust in fortune-tellers throughout his career. After deepening her study of tarot during lockdown, the house’s creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri was inspired to use its symbols in her S/S ’21 haute couture presentation. “I admire the cards for their poetic beauty, but also because they construct a narrative that evolves over time and according to our frame of mind,” she says. The film of the collection revealed a series of dreamlike creations, including a high-necked silk dress for the character of Justice, and a regal robe and crown for the High Priestess. “Each card invites infinite readings,” she says. “And in the same way, the pieces really come to life when you wear them and make them your own.”
