Perfect Proportions

Architectural triumph and innovative jewellery-making come together in the B.zero1’s latest iteration.

-

Now and again, a design will come along that isn’t just beautiful to wear and marvel at, but also one that makes perfect sense. As a true symbol of Bvlgari’s penchant for the avant-garde as well as its Roman roots, the B.zero1 ring is the perfect example of such a design. Rome is very dear to Bvlgari. It’s where the jeweller’s very first store was built in 1884 and where its headquarters currently reside. The spirit of Rome—its culture, its history, its artistry—is a constant inspiration that permeates across Bvlgari’s expansive catalogue. And as far as inspirations go, none is more emblematic of Rome than the historic Colosseum, the very architecture that would go on to inform the design of the B.zero1 ring.

The homage is unmistakable; the ring is practically a miniature of the Colosseum (albeit one that is dressed in gold). Debuted in 1999 to herald the dawn of a new era—as alluded to by its somewhat futuristic moniker, a reference to the brand’s first new jewellery line of the new millenium—the B.zero1 is composed of a central band sandwiched between two flat rings,

each engraved with the brand’s signature double logo.

Leaning on its heritage, Bvlgari adapted its Tubogas technique—the very same method that affords the Serpenti its flexibility—to create a spiral of one to five loops to form the central band. The result is a sleek and contemporary interpretation of its historic inspiration, bridging the past and the future with the very present. The B.zero1 is edgy, universal, and gender-free. It’s something that everybody can wear.

Because it makes perfect sense.

What makes the B.zero1even more fascinating is its adaptability. Whether the B.zero1 is styled as a ring, bracelet, necklace pendant or earrings, its form allows for transformation, opening itself up to a multitude of makeovers and creative collaborations over the years following its debut.

In 2009, British sculptor Anish Kapoor abandoned the ring’s central spiral and morphed it into a smooth steel concave. In 2012, the central band was formed out of marble in options of blue, brown and green. In 2014, the central band was ceramic, to better complement new rose gold models. Then in 2016, for the first time the B.zero1 was expressed in a trinity of rose, white and yellow gold.

Just last year, Bvlgari revealed the B.zero1’s latest incarnation in the B.zero1 Rock collection with a new studded central band not unlike the type of hardware usually sported by style-savvy Rock ’n’ Roll fans. For 2021, the Roman maison continues that idea by introducing six new additions to the Rock collection, the star of which is the 18 karat white gold necklace comprised of a chain with a B.zero1 pendant.

Owing its structure to architecture, it’s no surprise then that Bvlgari has turned to the design discipline once again for this new chapter, this time utilising legendary architect Le Corbusier’s Modulor measurement system in the design of the aforementioned necklace. Modulor is a system that uses the mathematical proportions of the human body as a basis to then calculate the perfect proportions for physical design and architecture.

A completely new design, this B.zero1 gold chain necklace is basically a series of individual modules linked together, each one composed of three hand-set and assembled elements. This necklace uses the original B.zero1 as its measuring reference to ensure that the proportions of the necklace are faithful to the iconic ring, thus achieving balance. By adapting Le Corbusier’s system, the new B.zero1 necklace combines revolutionary design principles with Bvlgari’s innovative craftsmanship, taking the B.zero1 to a new creative level.

The gold chain is also available in a thinner 18 karat white gold version, sold along with the main necklace and pendant to offer a different styling option. This new set of B.zero1 Rock collection also comes with an 18 karat rose gold iteration of the thinner chain complete with a rose gold studded pendant with black ceramic trims, and another model of 18 karat yellow gold chain with diamonds lining the edges of the studded pendant. Rounding up the collection are matching gold rings and stackable rose gold bangles featuring studs framed by black ceramic details.

With its harder edge, the B.zero1 Rock collection is designed for those who are bold and open-minded, and unashamedly so. Fittingly, the campaign for this new B.zero1 Rock collection features the maison’s young ambassadors, Hollywood star Zendaya and global superstar, Lisa Blackpink.
