Fronds Forever
Rolex gets artistic by way of a verdant tropical forest to add a surprising summer vibe to its ever popular Oyster Perpetual Datejust 36.
Easily the most popular of all Rolex models, the Rolex Datejust is loved the world over for its classic and timeless design codes. Launched in 1945, the Datejust was the first watch to offer a three-hand design, a date window, automatic winding, water resistance and chronometer certification—all the key features one now expects from their personal timekeeper. Hands down, the Datejust has become the archetype for all modern wristwatches.
Apart from its functionality, the Datejust offers great versatility, serving as the perfect canvas for experiments in dial designs over the decades from the textile-like Linen dial and pintripe dial, to the decorated mother-of-pearl dial and coloured dials in blue, mint, or deep purple. This year, with a focus on an exploration of creative dials, Rolex revisits its classic Oyster Perpetual Datejust 36 to give it a new unprecedented contemporary outlook.
Behold, the new Palm motif dial. Not really known for being all-out artistic with their designs, this new Palm motif dial is easily the closest Rolex has gotten to creating a pictorial dial. Perhaps more tellingly, it shows that now and then Rolex is open to having some fun with its watches. Produced via an ultrafast laser, the dial presents overlapping palm fronds dressed in three tones of green to evoke the feel of a lush, tropical forest. Beautifully housed in its elegant Oyster case, this Oyster Perpetual Datejust 36 makes for a unique style expression that can take you from boardroom to swimming pool effortlessly. It’s the perfect summer accessory.
The olive green dial model is easily our personal favourite, for its verdant allusion and distinctive pop of colour. It comes in a 36 mm
Oystersteel case with a sleek domed bezel and classic Oyster bracelet, a design that allows for the dial to shine. For Rolex traditionalists on the other hand, two other models offer a more subtle iteration of the Palm motif dial: a yellow Rolesor version (combining Oystersteel and 18 carat yellow gold) with an Oyster bracelet and golden dial, and an Everose Rolesor version (combining Oystersteel and 18 carat Everose gold) fitted with a Jubilee bracelet and the Palm motif dial in silver. Unlike the green dial version, these two models are both framed by an extravagant fluted bezel in their respective gold. Expectedly, a scratch-proof sapphire crystal protects the dial, fitted with a Cyclops lens at 3 o’clock for easy reading of the date. At its heart, each of these updated Datejust models come powered by the newer calibre 3235 with a 72-hour power reserve. The Oyster case also provides water-proofness up to 100 metres. Talk about taking to the swimming pool in style.
