Al­though it was Kok Wei who over­saw the over­all de­sign, Michelle chose the ma­te­ri­als and fur­nish­ings to tie the look to­gether. “Our pre­vi­ous place was a bit more play­ful and ‘child­ish’, but for this home we wanted some­thing more grownup,” she shares. For the built-in car­pen­try, they selected a blond wood lam­i­nate to be used through­out the house; this con­trasts beau­ti­fully with the pol­ished con­crete screed floor­ing they opted for. “Even though the orig­i­nal gran­ite tiles were ‘ sup­pos­edly bet­ter’, we re­moved them to get the bare, ‘ raw’ look,” laughs Kok Wei. The rooms, how­ever, fea­ture par­quet floor­ing for warmth, while pat­terned Span­ish tiles from Ha­fary, which re­minded them of Per­anakan tiles, ac­cent the kitchen.
