Achille Castiglioni was a designer who saw ordinary objects as an immense source of inspiration. The Arco floor lamp, designed in collaboration with the Italian designer’s brother Pier Giacomo, was inspired by a streetlight. The dramatic master piece is not only celebrated for its timeless beauty, but also for its usefulness. The lamp’s adjustable arm extends eight feet, providing overhead lighting at a dining table or sofa without requiring ceiling suspension. Its Carrara marble base cements its position but the designers realised that it would be difficult to move the 35kg lamp. They placed a hole in the base to accommodate a broom handle to assist lifting and moving. This is a feature that is often omitted from fake designs.

The Flos Arco floor lamp is available from Space.
