Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS)

The first thing you should know about the Apple Watch Series 3 is that only the GPS model is available in Malaysia at launch. Sure, an LTE-enabled Apple Watch was one of the highly requested features from the community, but that’s not to say that there aren’t any significant changes under the hood to satisfy Series 1 owners and new users alike.

Under the hood, the third-generation Apple Watch brings with it a faster dual-core processor, and a new W2 wireless chip that not only delivers improved Wi-Fi performance, but is also 50-percent more energy efficient compared to the previous generation. App loading is noticeably quicker, while the UI experience benefits from smoother interactions. Also new to Series 3 is the barometric altimeter to track the number of stairs climbed, as well as to measure elevation gain during hikes or other outdoor activities.

The Series 3’s design is relatively unchanged, though the 38mm and 42mm models are now 0.25mm thicker than the now-discontinued Series 2, most likely to accommodate the added functionality of the cellular model. Meanwhile, water resistance is still rated at 50 meters, which makes it safe for you to take a dip in the pool – with the appropriate band and precaution, of course. Speaking of bands, Apple introduced two new nylon-weave straps to the collection: the Sport Loop and Woven Nylon.

Of course, much of the QoL improvements come from watchOS 4, which is preinstalled on the Series 3. Both the Heart Rate and Workout app received significant updates – with the former measuring heart rates during walking and rest, and the latter now capable of tracking back-to-back workouts and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) exercises. Soon, gymgoers can pair the Series 3 with GymKit-compatible fitness equipment for even more accurate workout results. The Activity app, on the other hand, will nudge you to close the three rings before the end of the day with suggested activities.

watchOS4 also adds three new watch faces: the Siri face dynamically displays information that are most relevant at that moment in time; Kaleidoscope lets you alter its patterns by rotating the digital crown; and Toy Story delights with cute animations of Woody, Buzz, and friends. Better yet, you can download third-party games, as well as productivity and health apps that are readily accessible from your wrist. The same goes for Siri, who can now answer aloud, thanks to the built-in speaker.

Despite the performance upgrades, Series 2 owners may well sit this one out, as the cellular model makes for a better upgrade.

A second-to-none smartwatch, especially when it comes to the iphone.
