Dempsey Hill

-

Once a barracks, now a leafy destination for atas eating, however be warned, there are no pavements to speak of, no shade (avoid midday), and it’s a veritable maze that can be tricky to navigate. Hop out of your cab on Dempsey Rd at Lotto Gallery / Block 26 / 6476 8784 / an Aladdin’s cave of Oriental carpets run by the friendly Imran. Once outside, note that if you swivel left and continue to the end of the cul de sac you’ll reach Samy’s (see Lunch) and Long Beach (see Rest/relaxed), but if you aren’t hungry, turn right, past the Disgruntled Chef (see Rest/smart) on your left, and on to Emgallery / Block 16 / 6475 6941 / for Emiko Nakamura’s awesome Asian textiles and ceramics. From here, keep right until you reach Linda Gallery / Block 15 / 6476 7000 / experts in modern Chinese art. Onwards again in the direction of the traffic, then keep right to the road’s end, where you’ll find chic decor emporium Asiatique / 6471 3146. At #14c is Curio Home / Block 16 / 6479 7619 / for contempo British furny by the likes of Andrew Martin and Kelly Hoppen. Tear yourself away to retrace your steps again, then turn right for a muchneeded refuel pitstop at crabby Jumbo / block 11 (see Rest/ Relaxed) on the left or, on the right, carnivorous Culina / Block 8 (see Lunch). Proceed onto the ace Red Sea Gallery / Block 9 (see Art) for Asia-pacific paintings and sculpture, then backtrack and take the road between Blocks 8 and 9 to House (see Spa) for a super-duper pampering session.
