Oeis on the Prize
Ooi Piek See and her three sons step outside of their comfort zones and come together for their first cover story as a family unit
In the bigger scheme of things, a photo shoot is an easier task to complete than say, building a home for the orang asli community in the span of three days. But to the Oei family, the prospect of having their pictures taken was a nerve-wracking process, in comparison to building homes for communities. “It is the first time we’re being photographed as a family, for a magazine,” confessed Ooi Piek See as she watched photographer Kim Mun and his assistants from Hopscotch Photography setting up. In the end, they had nothing to worry about. Under Kim Mun’s concise direction, the three boys—john-ian, John-son and JohnHans Oei—and Piek See got into the groove of things. Having already gone for a wardrobe fitting with fashion brand Shiatzy Chen’s helpful team, a few days prior to the shoot, made the process smoother because the outfits looked good on every one of them. Midway through the photo session, John-son excused himself to attend a cheque presentation ceremony for his NGO, EPIC. A minor crisis arose when a deluge of rain and heavy traffic delayed him from returning to the studio. However, he made his way back just in time to pose for the final shot of the day. Check out the resulting images from the shoot and read our story about this inspiring family on page 156.
